What Trauma Therapy in Atlanta Looks Like

Trauma therapy begins with safety. We build a foundation first-a therapeutic relationship where you feel grounded and safe to do the work.

From there, we use approaches that have strong evidence behind them. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) helps you examine and work through the beliefs that formed around what happened - thoughts like it was my fault or nowhere is safe.

Prolonged Exposure helps you gradually approach memories and situations you've been avoiding, teaching your nervous system that the threat has passed. Both are structured, paced, and guided by where you are each week — never pushed.

Prolonged Exposure (PE) helps you gradually approach memories and situations you've been avoiding, which teaches your brain that the threat has passed and reduces associated anxiety and fear. Both are structured and guided each week.

FAQs

Questions People Ask Before Their First Session

How is trauma therapy different from regular therapy?

Trauma therapy uses structured, evidence-based approaches designed for how trauma is stored in the body and brain. Without that structure, talking about trauma can sometimes increase distress rather than ease it.

CPT helps you identify and work through the beliefs that formed around a traumatic experience - like it was my fault or I can't trust anyone. As those beliefs shift, the emotional weight of the trauma tends to decrease.

PE is an exposure based trauma focused therapy where you will focus on reducing the anxiety associated with trauma reminders and you can engage in your life more comfortably and fully. You will also work on revisiting the trauma memory so your brain can digest the memory and your PTSD symptoms will decrease.

Not necessarily, and never before you're ready. Some approaches work more with present-day responses and beliefs than with detailed retelling. We'll decide together what makes sense for you

Structured treatment approaches like CPT take about 12 sessions and PE about 8 to 16 session. Some people need more and some need less. We'll assess and adjust as needed together throughout treatment.

Yes — often very effectively. The brain doesn't distinguish between old and recent trauma in how it stores distress. Old wounds respond to treatment just as well as recent ones.
